Second Acts and comebacks, Part Five

1- Stefan Reuter and Borussia Dortmund/Germany, post 1994
German defender Stefan Reuter was one of the major casualties of Germany’s disappointing Euro 1992 showing. He was discarded by Berti Vogts and missed the 1994 World cup. In the meantime he had joined Borussia Dortmund in 1992 and was starting to resurrect his career. His performances did not go unnoticed and after the 1994 World Cup, he was back in the fold and remained in the national team set up for years and won titles with his club along the way.

2- Wim Hofkens and Mechelen, late 1980s
Dutch defender had earned his first cap for Holland in a Friendly on April 27, 1983 (Holland 0-Sweden 3) while an Anderlecht player.
For years after that he was off the radar and future International caps seemed beyond him.
His fortunes changed when he joined the ambitious Belgian club Mechelen that included many Dutch teammates. By 1989, he was back in the national team and also won titles with his club.

3- Johann Cruyff and Ajax, 1980/83
Dutch legend Johann Cruyff’s best days seemed to be behind him, when he surprisingly rejoined Ajax Amsterdam after a spell in the NASL.
He became a guide for a new crop of players who were emerging such as Marco van Basten, Franck Rijkaard, Wim Kieft, Jesper Olsen,  etc.
The team also won the League title in 1982 and the Double in 1983.

4- Aime Jacquet and France 1994/98
Aime Jacquet’s once promising coaching career seemed in disarray following his sacking at Bordeaux in early 1989. Unsuccessful stints followed at Montpellier and Nancy. He became  French National Team Manager Gerard Houllier’s assistant in 1992. After the heartbreak of not qualifying for the 1994 World Cup, Jacquet was appointed as National Team manager with the task of rebuilding. He did that by ushering in the Zidane-Djorkaeff era. He led France to a semifinal spot in the 1996 Euros and won the 1998 World Cup at home to retire from coaching in style.

5- Roberto Baggio and Bologna, 1997/98
Italy’s Roberto Baggio’s career seemed to be on a downward spiral after a disappointing spell at AC Milan (1995/97). He surprisingly joined mid-table squad Bologna in the summer of 1997.  That season he started to enjoy his Football again and scored more than 20 goals that led Bologna to UEFA Cup qualification. So good were his performances that he made his return to the national team and made the 1998 World Cup finals squad. At the end of the season he was rewarded with a move to Internazionale Milano.

Events and Consequences, Part Thirteen

1- Event:
Johann Cruyff contract dispute with Ajax Amsterdam, 1983

Consequence:
Johann Cruyff had a dispute with the Ajax management over his contract at the end of the 1982/83 season.
With the matter unresolved, he angrily joined rivals Feyenoord and helped them clinch the domestic double for the 1983/84 season and retired in style.

2- Event:
André Rey breaking his hand in 1978.

Consequence:
FC Metz goalkeeper André Rey was to be France’s starting goalkeeper for the 1978 World Cup. However, on March 12th, 1978, during one of his club’s training sessions,  teammate and fellow International defender Patrick Battiston took such a hard shot in training that it broke Rey’s left hand.
This effectively ruled him out of the World Cup and future caps. Nantes goalkeeper Jean-Paul Bertrand-Demanes took his place for the World Cup.

3- Event:
Holger Hieronymus’ collision injury with Fritz Walter

Consequence:
SV Hamburg International defender Holger Hieronymus had a collision with Fritz Walter during a Bundesliga match on March 31, 1984 (SV Hamburg 2-Waldhof Mannheim 3).
So severe was the injury that his season was over. He was still suffering from the injury for the following season to such an extent that he missed the entire season. At the end of that season, he decided to put an end to his career at the age of only 26.

4- Event:
John Houlding’s dispute with Everton in 1892

Consequence:
Everton FC played at Anfield until 1892. But then a dispute arose between Everton Chairman (and Anfield landowner) John Houlding and the Everton Club Committee. Houlding tried to gain control by registering the company as ‘Everton FC and Athletic grounds Ltd’.
As a result, the Everton FC left Anfield and went to play at Goodison Park.
Houlding tried to take the Everton name and club colors but the English FA refused this request. As a result, Houlding founded Liverpool FC with their home at Anfield to this day.

5- Event:
Hungarian club Attila Budapest’s tour in 1934.

Consequence:
As part of their tour Hungarian club played a friendly vs. RC Lens in 1934.
They realized they were lacking funds for their return trip home. To finance this, they decided to sell one of their players.
19-year old Ladislas Smid (Siklo) was sold for 13,000 French Francs.
Siklo stayed at RC Lens for sixteen years, became a naturalized French in 1937 and was even capped by France in 1945.
He stayed in his adoptive country for the remainder of his life.
